ISLAMABAD: Highlighting the power of culture as a bridge between nations, Vietnam on Thursday used the screening of its acclaimed historical film “Peach Blossom, Pho and Piano” during the Francophonie Film Week in Islamabad to showcase the country’s rich heritage, resilience and enduring spirit, while reinforcing people-to-people ties between Vietnam and Pakistan.
Addressing diplomats, members of the Francophone community and guests from various walks of life, the Ambassador of Vietnam Pham Anh Tuan, said the film screening was not only a celebration of the French language and Francophone values but also an opportunity to deepen mutual understanding through cultural exchange.
Welcoming distinguished ambassadors and heads of mission of Francophone countries, the envoy thanked the Francophone Group in Pakistan and participating embassies for organizing the event, describing it as a meaningful platform that reflects the diversity, creativity and shared values of the Francophone community.
The ambassador noted that cinema serves as a powerful bridge between cultures, enabling people to understand different histories and experiences while highlighting universal aspirations such as peace, love, resilience and hope.
The film, set during the final days of the Battle of Hanoi in the winter of 1946-47, depicts the courage and determination of ordinary Vietnamese citizens who defended their city amid extraordinary challenges. However, the envoy emphasized that the production is much more than a war story.
Referring to the film’s symbolic title, the ambassador explained that the peach blossom represents spring, renewal and hope; pho symbolizes daily life, culture and national identity; while the piano reflects art, humanity and the enduring spirit of civilization. Together, these elements convey the message that even in times of conflict, people continue to cherish culture, love and dreams for a better future.
The diplomat said the film has received widespread acclaim in Vietnam for its artistic excellence and emotional depth, resonating strongly with audiences through its portrayal of friendship, sacrifice, compassion and perseverance.
Highlighting growing bilateral relations, the ambassador said Vietnam and Pakistan continue to strengthen cooperation across various sectors, adding that cultural exchanges often create stronger bonds between peoples than official agreements or statistics.
The envoy expressed hope that the screening would provide Pakistani audiences and members of the diplomatic community with a deeper understanding of Vietnam’s history, culture and the optimism of its people.
The ambassador also acknowledged the role of the International Organisation of La Francophonie in promoting dialogue among nations and fostering cultural diversity worldwide, reaffirming Vietnam’s commitment to active participation in the Francophone community and enhanced cooperation with fellow member states.
The event concluded with a screening of the film, offering guests an opportunity to experience a compelling blend of history, culture, and human resilience through Vietnamese cinema.
