PESHAWAR :A new chapter has been added to the history of women’s sports in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as Bacha Khan University, Charsadda, organized provincial-level trials for female boxers under the Prime Minister’s Youth Talent Hunt Program. Held at the boxing arena of Qayyum Stadium in Peshawar, the event marked a significant milestone by providing young girls from across the province with a safe, dignified, and well-structured platform to showcase their skills.
The driving force behind this landmark event was Bacha Khan University’s Director of Sports and former international athlete, Shabana Khattak. Her passion, sincerity, and exceptional organizational skills were central to the successful execution of the trials. Known for her unwavering commitment to creating opportunities for women in sports, Shabana once again demonstrated her visionary leadership.

Shabana Khattak personally engaged with the athletes, addressing their concerns and encouraging them at every stage. According to several participants, it was the first time they experienced such a supportive and friendly atmosphere in a sporting environment, enabling them to perform with confidence.
Dozens of talented female boxers from various districts of the province—including Peshawar, Mardan, Charsadda, Kohat, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan, and Swat—participated in the trials with remarkable enthusiasm. Each athlete showcased impressive skills, strength, and sportsmanship, affirming that international-level talent exists within the women of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. What they need are the right opportunities, guidance, and facilities.
The event’s chief guest was Federal Minister for SAFRON, Mr. Amir Muqam, who applauded the initiative and emphasized the importance of women’s participation in sports. He stated that such activities not only help in unearthing talent but also boost women’s confidence, allowing them to play an active role in society.
The event was also attended by former Governor Iqbal Zafar Jhagra and representatives of the Higher Education Commission (HEC), who praised the initiative. They highlighted the critical role universities and educational institutions can play in promoting women’s sports. Among the notable attendees was Ms. Raham Bi bi, former Director of Sports at Frontier College for Women, Peshawar—an influential figure in the development of women’s sports—who lauded Shabana Khattak’s leadership and emphasized the importance of such initiatives in driving real change.
A large number of teachers and students from women’s colleges also attended the event. They not only praised the high standards and management of the trials but also paid tribute to Shabana Khattak’s tireless efforts and exemplary leadership.
Participating boxers expressed that it was the first time they were provided with an environment that combined respect, support, and professional guidance. For many, these trials were not just a competition but the realization of a dream, affirming their belief that they too can represent Pakistan on national and international stages.
The trials were held under the supervision of the Provincial Boxing Association, with officials from various district associations in attendance. These trials were more than just an event—they marked the beginning of a movement. The recognition, facilities, and cross-sector representation afforded to female boxers demonstrated that with sincere intentions and the right guidance, women can excel in any field.
Under the leadership of determined and talented individuals like Shabana Khattak, the future of women’s sports in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa appears bright. It is now essential for the government, sports boards, educational institutions, and the private sector to unite with a shared commitment to ensure that every girl receives equal and safe opportunities to step into the sporting arena.
