PROVINCE REPORT
ISLAMABAD: The Federation of Progressive Students organised a solidarity event at the Embassy of Cuba in Islamabad on October 9 to commemorate Cuban revolutionary leader Ernesto “Che” Guevara and express opposition to the US blockade of Cuba.
The event brought together students, academics, members of solidarity organisations, the Pakistan Cuba Social Forum, the Awami Workers Party and the Pakistani Cuban Doctors Association (PCDA).
Speakers highlighted Che Guevara’s commitment to the struggles of disadvantaged communities, his internationalist legacy, his close friendship with Fidel Castro and his opposition to what they described as imperialist policies. They also paid tribute to his role in promoting international solidarity and social justice.
Participants recalled Cuba’s humanitarian assistance to Pakistan following the devastating October 8, 2005 earthquake, when thousands of Cuban medical specialists arrived in the country to provide emergency medical care and save lives.
A major focus of the event was opposition to the US economic blockade and the sanctions imposed on Cuba, including restrictions affecting its energy supplies. Speakers called for an end to the measures, arguing that Cuba posed no threat and that the blockade itself was the issue requiring international attention.
The event concluded with renewed calls for solidarity with the Cuban people and support for efforts to end the blockade.
The organisers reaffirmed their message of solidarity under the slogan: “Cuba Is Not Alone.”
