RABAT: The Republic of Panama has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan as the only solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue and voiced its backing for United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797.

The position was expressed by Panama’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Arturo Hoyos Boyd, during a working visit to Morocco following talks with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.

According to the Panamanian official, his country considers the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco under its sovereignty as the only serious, credible and realistic basis for achieving a lasting settlement to the regional dispute within the framework of the United Nations process and in full respect of Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Hoyos Boyd also noted that Panama’s embassy in Morocco exercises its consular functions throughout Moroccan territory, including the southern provinces.

He reiterated Panama’s support for UN Security Council Resolution 2797 and expressed full backing for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to facilitate negotiations aimed at reaching a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution for all parties.

The Panamanian vice minister emphasized that negotiations should be conducted within the framework of the Moroccan autonomy proposal and under the auspices of the United Nations to achieve a peaceful resolution of the dispute.
