The Shandur Polo Festival 2026 concluded successfully at the world’s highest polo ground, set against the breathtaking backdrop of the northern mountains of Pakistan. The three-day event brought together thousands of local and international visitors, blending traditional sport, cultural heritage, and tourism in a vibrant celebration of national unity.

Organized jointly by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Culture and Tourism Authority (KPCTA) and the Pakistan Army, the festival once again highlighted Shandur’s unique identity as both a sporting arena and a cultural landmark. Located at an altitude of around 12,000 feet between Upper Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan, Shandur is widely regarded as the highest natural polo ground in the world.

The opening ceremony was attended by Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Faisal Karim Kundi as chief guest, along with senior officials, local leaders, and a large number of spectators. Addressing the gathering, he termed the festival a symbol of Pakistan’s cultural richness and inter-provincial harmony, emphasizing the government’s commitment to promoting tourism and improving visitor facilities in the northern regions.

The highlight of the festival remained the traditional freestyle polo contest between Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan. In a thrilling final, Gilgit-Baltistan delivered a strong performance to defeat Chitral and secure the championship title after thirteen years. The match drew massive crowds, with spectators cheering throughout the intense competition.

At the closing ceremony, the Corps Commander Peshawar praised the successful organization of the event and described it as a reflection of national unity, peace, and brotherhood. He said the festival brings together people from diverse regions, strengthening bonds of harmony across the country.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Information Shafi Jan stated that the provincial government has taken practical steps to improve tourism infrastructure, including better accommodation, security, medical services, and transport facilities for visitors. He added that the festival projects a positive and peaceful image of Pakistan internationally.

DG KPCTA Muhammad Shahid Khan called Shandur a reflection of Pakistan’s cultural soul and said the festival promotes tourism, preserves heritage, and supports local livelihoods. He noted that artisans, performers, and small businesses benefit significantly from the event, while efforts continue to promote new tourist destinations and improve infrastructure.

Beyond sports, the festival featured rich cultural performances, including traditional dances, folk music, school tableaux, handicraft exhibitions, and local cuisine. Adventure activities such as paragliding, trekking, camping, and fishing added further attraction for visitors, making Shandur a complete tourism experience.

The event also generated meaningful economic activity for local communities, benefiting hotels, transport operators, shopkeepers, and artisans. Organizers described the festival as a powerful platform for showcasing Pakistan’s natural beauty, cultural diversity, and hospitality.

As Shandur Polo Festival 2026 came to an end, it left behind lasting memories of thrilling sports, vibrant culture, and breathtaking landscapes. The event once again reaffirmed its place as one of Pakistan’s most important cultural and tourism celebrations, expected to grow further in scale and international appeal in the coming years.
